The successful candidate will demonstrate superior team-oriented leadership, a commitment to effective collaboration with Counseling and Prevention and Wellness Services, strong financial and administrative management skills, and the experience and ability to inspire, motivate, and communicate effectively with SHC staff, colleagues within the Division, other campus partners, and specifically Western students. The Director must demonstrate excellent multicultural competency and sensitivity, and the ability to work well with and support diverse groups to ensure that the services are inclusive and meet the needs of all community members. With a student-centered approach informing all programs and services, the new Director will engage staff in strategic planning to identify and achieve new opportunities for innovation in program, service, and business models while enhancing quality in all aspects of care and operations.

Position Purpose and Functions:
The Director is responsible for the strategic leadership, vision, effective management, supervision, and administration of the University's Student Health Center (SHC), an outpatient primary care medical facility which serves over 15,000 students. The SHC is staffed by a team of board-certified family physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and support staff. Reporting to the Executive Director for Counseling, Health and Wellness (Executive Director), the Director works closely with the Executive Director regarding mission, goals and programs, outreach services, staff development, budget, personnel, resource management, assessment, sustainability and overall direction of the SHC. The Director is a member of the Counseling, Health, and Wellness (CHW) Management Team and collaborates with others across the Division and campus on issues relating to community health and wellness, including public health and emergency/disaster planning.
Primary Job Functions:
40% General Administration:
• Provide vision and leadership in establishing and monitoring the scope and direction of the Student Health Center, ensuring its operation is consistent with applicable standards of practice. • Organize and lead short- and long-term strategic planning for organizational sustainability. • Develop, implement and provide oversight and direction for all clinical policies, procedures, and protocols, ensuring compliance with all appropriate federal, state, local and university regulatory requirements and regulations. • Monitor and ensure compliance with all accreditation standards, license requirements, and state laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of medicine, and related standards for the management of all aspects of services provided. • Ensure maximum utilization of Student Health Center resources by working closely with the Associate Director in monitoring all activities of the Student Health Center's staff. • Provide sound fiscal management of the Student Health Center budget. Monitors the budget, establishes funding priorities, identifies optional funding resources, and approves expenditures. • Participate as a member of the Counseling, Health, and Wellness (CHW) Management Team. • Collaborate with other campus Directors to establish coordinated and comprehensive services for students on campus. • Provide the Executive Director for Health & Wellness an annual evaluation and summary of Student Health Center operations, services, and outcomes, as well as strategies and recommendations for addressing demands, and changing student health & University needs. • Oversee the management and enforcement of immunization requirements for student registration and new employee screening.
30% Personnel Management:
• Oversee hiring, training, work performance, and professional development of a staff of approximately 45; including temporary and permanent Medical Doctors, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and office staff. • Meet regularly with staff as needed to provide support and direction for specific administrative areas within the Student Health Center (e.g. clinical operations, research and assessment, outreach and consultation). • Establish policies and procedures for Health Center operations and communicate clearly with Student Health Center staff regarding policies, operations, scope of services, and standards of practice.
20% Campus and Community Involvement:
• Serve as the primary representative of the Student Health Center to the Division of Enrollment and Student Services (ESS) Directors' meeting. • Provide consultation to WWU administration and staff regarding emergencies and crisis management, including assisting with public health concerns on campus in consultation with the Whatcom County Health Department, the State Department of Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. • Serve as representative on a variety of departmental, divisional, university, state, and or/national committees. • Represent and promote student health services through positive public relations with the local community and region. • Act as or assign liaison(s) for Peace Health St. Joseph Medical staff and emergency room staff, Whatcom Counseling and Psychiatric Clinic for Designated Mental Health Professionals, and PeaceHealth St. Joseph Behavioral Health Inpatient Center.
10% Clinical Services:
• Ensure clinical back up and follow up is provided to all students seen by temporary fill in staff and by contract psychiatrists.
• An advanced degree or doctorate in health care administration, public health, educational health administration, a medical discipline, or a related field. o A medical degree or clinical background is not required but if a physician (M.D. or D.O.) or nurse practitioner or other medical provider, current license or eligibility to obtain license to practice medicine in the State of Washington, would be required for clinical expertise. • Minimum five years of administrative experience in a healthcare setting, including supervisory/managerial experience. • Experience in overseeing major facets of a clinical health center, including quality management and improvement for patient care, infection control and safety, and clinical records. • Experience working with a diverse population and demonstrated cultural competence. • Knowledge of the issues in delivery of healthcare to late adolescents and young adults. • Excellent human capital management skills including recruitment, management and talent development of staff • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills • Demonstrated high level of accuracy, thoroughness and attention to detail • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex data to inform decisions
• Electronic Medical Record system proficiency. • Experience working with a college age population. • Knowledge of and experience in any accreditation requirements and activities (e.g. AAAHC, Joint Commission, APA). • Experience as director of a college or university health center. • Experience in a college or university health center.
