On behalf of the Pediatric Service Group, LLP located at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, and Division Chief of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Melissa Schafer MD, CareerPhysician, LLC, the leader in pediatric physician executive search, is pleased to inform you of the inception of a national search to identify a dynamic and talented physician to join the section of Pediatric Hospital Medicine in Syracuse, NY.
The Section of Pediatric Hospital Medicine houses a new two-year PHM fellowship program with one fellow spot per year. They currently have a fellow for 2023 and 2024.
The hospitalist service staffs three teams every day, 365 days per year, with additional teams created at times of high volume. There are two teaching teams, each led by a hospitalist with senior residents, interns, and medical students, and a third team led by a hospitalist with nurse practitioners that have patients with behavioral/mental health concerns and straightforward medical problems. Teaching services see 12-15 patients per day. Night call is from home through a shared call rotation averaging two nights of home call per service week.
Full-time PHM faculty are expected to work just 20 clinical weeks each year, creating a culture that fosters a great balance between professional expectation and personal quality of life.
The hospital system features an on-site PICU, Children’s Surgical Center, and dedicated Pediatric Emergency Room, all staffed by dedicated teams. The department offers a comprehensive group of pediatric subspecialists, pediatric surgical subspecialists, and pediatric ancillary services available for inpatient and outpatient consultation. SUNY Upstate is also an ACS certified level one pediatric trauma center and burn center. The PHM team is not responsible for covering NICU, delivery room, or newborn services.
Golisano Children’s is unwavering in providing fiscal support to expand Pediatric Hospital Medicine services to manage unexpected patient surges. In addition, the institution provides salary funding for the hospitalist faculty as well as continued support for hiring nurse practitioners and essential ancillary staff to help with various clinical activities.
Upstate Golisano Children’s will consider faculty at all ranks. Applicants should be board eligible, or board certified in Pediatrics. Board certification in Pediatric Hospital Medicine is preferred, but not required.
